NASDAQ Surges and Cup and Handle
Breakouts Return Average 6.2% The NASDAQ surged 3.9 this week and the rising tide lifted both cup and handle and Volatility Squeeze breakouts to an average 6.2% and 6.0% respectively. Of the 26 breakouts this week, only one closed with a small loss from its breakout price. The sudden reversal from last week's bearish view came in anticipation of the Fed cutting interest rates rates to offset slowing growth. The turnaround came after FAANG stocks took a hit on Monday following concerns over potential government regulation. These stocks recovered most of their losses by week's end but left the NASDAQ slightly lagging the S&P 500(+4.4%) and DJI(+4.7%). On Friday, after a disappointing jobs report, the markets gapped up as traders anticipated that slowing jobs growth and wage inflation would force the Fed to cut rates at least once this year. Note that despite the week's upturn, our market indicators, which are always lagging, still point downwards. |
